Olea Europea (‘The Tree of Peace’) is a frost and drought-tolerant plant that makes for a good ornamental as well as a producer of olive fruits. It spans a history that extends back to Ancient Pharaohs and Abrahamic References: importantly regarded in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. In the Old Testament story of the flood, Adam sends out a dove which returns with an Olive branch: A symbol of peace and regeneration. The oil has been used in baptism, in the consecration of priests, the anointing of the sick, and in confirmation. In the Mediterranean, the Greeks associated the Olive plant with Athena (goddess of wisdom), and the Romans even levied payment of taxes with olive oil. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fatty acids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory applications.

Arbequina is an easy-to-grow and very high-quality oil olive from Catalonia, Spain. It can fruit in as little as 2 to 4 years beginning with small green fruits that turn into brown aromatic olives when mature. It is widely grown in California for the Olive Oil industry.

Arbequina is a low-maintenance Olive varietal. Use well-draining soil and give 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. Water once or twice each week, or check when dry with your finger 1-2 inches deep. Feed twice yearly with a high nitrogen slow-release fertilizer.
